Bayonne UJA to honor Boussos

Renee and Albert Bousso will be honored for their service to the Bayonne community at UJA Federation of Bayonne’s annual breakfast on Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Jewish Community Center of Bayonne. Michelle Levine chairs the event, which kicks off the 2010 fund-raising campaign. Repw. Albio Sires (D-13) is the keynote speaker.

The Boussos were born in Egypt and were raised in Hellopolis, a suburb of Cairo. They met in 1954 and were married in the Great Synagogue of Cairo in 1957. Fleeing anti-Semitism and the persecution of Jews erupting after the 1956 Suez conflict, they and their young daughters left Egypt in 1962 and immigrated to the United States in 1963, settling in Jersey City. They moved to Bayonne in 1968 and retired in 2003 after a long career at the B. Manischewitz Company in Jersey City.

Before becoming affiliated with Temple Emanu-El in Bayonne, Albert Bousso served as vice president of the now defunct Cong. Talmud Torah there. Albert and Renee Bousso, respectively, are the president and vice president of Temple Emanu-El and served as chairs of the 2007-2008 UJA campaign. Renee Bousso is also a life member and board member of the Bayonne-Jersey City chapter of Hadassah.

The Boussos have two daughters, Linda Drillman and Maryse Bloom, and six grandchildren. The cost of the breakfast is $30 per person. For reservations, call the BJCC office, (201) 436-6900.

Until he’s free, we really can’t rest

Community rallies in support of captured Israeli soldier

As Israel Defense Forces Staff Sgt. Gilad Shalit faces his fourth birthday in the hands of Hamas, UJA Federation of Northern New Jersey is joining a nationwide effort to mobilize the public on his behalf.

“Until he’s free, we really can’t rest,” said David Cohen, chairman of the agency’s Israel Programs Center.

Shalit, an armored corps soldier who turns 23 on Aug. 28, was captured on June 25, 2006, in a cross-border raid from the Gaza Strip and has been held hostage ever since. He is believed to be alive.
