A Palestinian mufti and the U.S. election

WASHINGTON – A Palestinian mufti has called for violence against Jews, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is demanding Palestinian leaders disavow him, and America’s presidential race could be affected.

That could be the lead sentence of a news report from last week.

Or it could be the lead from 1946.

Sixty-five years ago, another Palestinian mufti, another Netanyahu, and another presidential race in the United States likewise intersected in an unexpected round of high-stakes Middle East politics and diplomacy.

At the center of the current controversy is Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, the mufti of Jerusalem, who is the Palestinian Authority’s senior religious official. In a recent speech, Hussein cited a hadith, a traditional Islamic text, supposedly spoken by Islam’s founder, Muhammad. “The Hour will not come until you fight the Jews,” the quoted text states. “The Jews will hide behind stones or trees. Then the stones or trees will call: Oh Muslim, servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him.”

In a U.S. presidential election season, such words can be explosive. The candidates for the Republican nomination have strongly condemned Palestinian incitement against Israel and criticized the Obama administration for not being more outspoken on the issue. The votes of Jews and pro-Israel evangelical Christians could be decisive in some battleground states in November.

“Whoever wants peace should not permit such incitement and should not allow calls to murder Jews,” Netanyahu said, urging the Palestinian Authority to disavow the mufti’s remarks.

He said that Hussein’s “morally heinous” statements were reminiscent of one of his predecessors, Haj Amin al-Husseini, who was grand mufti of Jerusalem, a position to which he was appointed by British High Commissioner Herbert Samuel. Al-Husseini fled Palestine in 1937 after he helped lead an aborted Arab revolt against the British. In 1941, he traveled to Germany, where he openly collaborated with Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime. Al-Husseini’s pro-Nazi radio broadcasts were beamed from Berlin to the Arab world — including a March 1, 1944, tirade in which he exhorted his listeners, in language similar to that of the current controversy, to “kill the Jews wherever you find them.”

What is not well known is the impact the mufti had on the 1948 U.S. presidential race.

In the aftermath of World War II and the revelations of the full extent of the Shoah, American Jews and Christian Zionists pressed President Harry S Truman to endorse creation of a Jewish state. Truman, fearful that the United States would be dragged into sending “half a million troops” to Palestine, preferred to stay at arm’s length from the conflict.

His political advisers, however, saw trouble looming in the 1946 midterm congressional elections. New York State Democratic chairman Paul Fitzpatrick warned that if Truman failed to support Jewish statehood, “it would be useless for the Democrats to nominate a state ticket this fall.” And another longtime New York Democratic Party leader, Ed Flynn, predicted that if Truman backed down on Palestine, “the effects will be severely felt in November.”

Enter Haj Amin al-Husseini. In the waning days of World War II, al-Husseini made his way to France, where he was placed under house arrest. Yugoslavia indicted him for war crimes committed by members of an all-Muslim SS unit he organized in Bosnia, but did not seek his extradition. The French and the British, nervous about angering the Arab world, likewise took no action.

While al-Husseini was relaxing in his French villa, a series of exposés in early 1946 in the New York daily newspapers The New York Post and PM, and the weekly Washington publication The Nation revealed new details of the former grand mufti’s wartime activities, including his sabotage of a prisoner exchange with the Germans that would have saved the lives of 4,000 Jewish children.

Furious Jewish groups in the United States wanted Truman to intervene. The American Zionist Emergency Council sent the State Department a 13-page memo urging the United States to indict the mufti.

Another notable voice of protest was that of the historian Benzion Netanyahu, the father of Israel’s current prime minister, who in the 1940s was director of the U.S. wing of the militant Revisionist Zionist movement. He sponsored large newspaper advertisements headlined “The Mufti Must Be Brought to Trial!” and featuring a photograph of al-Husseini meeting with Hitler. The administration ignored the protests.

To make matters worse, in May 1946, the mufti escaped to Cairo — with what seemed to be the connivance of the French and British — and promptly renewed his efforts to incite the Arabs in Palestine against the Jews. For Jewish leaders in the United States, it was another sign that London, with Washington’s tacit support, was taking the Arabs’ side.

Even Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, usually the most pro-Truman voice in the Jewish leadership, publicly urged the president to “speak sharply and act decisively in relation to the [Palestine policy of] the British Government.”

Meanwhile, the Republicans were taking up the Zionist cause. In 1944, the GOP had adopted the first-ever platform plank endorsing Jewish statehood (which the Democrats then had to match). From 1945 to 1948, the likely contenders for the Republican nomination, Ohio Sen. Robert A. Taft and New York Gov. Thomas E. Dewey, repeatedly urged creation of a Jewish state and criticized the Truman administration for waffling on the issue.

The mufti’s escape and the revelations about his World War II activity were part of the tumultuous series of events in 1946-48 that helped inflame Jewish voters in the United States against the Truman administration and, by association, the Democratic Party. It contributed to the Republican landslide in the 1946 midterm congressional elections (including the election of the first Republican senator from New York in 30 years) and the shocking defeat of Truman’s candidate in a congressional election in New York City in early 1948.

These developments doubtless had a profound impact on Truman. Fear of losing Jewish votes to the Republicans moved him to endorse the idea of a Jewish state in 1946, when he heard Dewey was about to do so; to support the 1947 United Nations partition plan (which Netanyahu publicly opposed), when his advisers told him failure to do so would cost him “two or three pivotal states” in the 1948 presidential election; and surely influenced his decision on May 14, 1948, to recognize the newborn State of Israel.

With less than six months to go before he faced re-election, how could Truman ignore his top aide’s warning that “the Jewish vote is important in New York…[and] no candidate since 1876 has lost New York and won the presidency”?

Whether the controversy over the current Palestinian mufti escalates to the point of affecting the 2012 presidential election, all sides would do well to keep in mind what 1948 tells us about the potential electoral impact of Middle East politics.

Learning the lessons of history

We are all too familiar with the rhetorical currency of anti-Semites. Jews control the human and material resources of every society in which they are found, the anti-Semites say, no matter how few in number we may be in said society. They maintain an international conspiracy. They meet secretly, presenting a pleasant and cooperative face to the world, but using hidden teachings of their sacred books to plot the overthrow of societies they consider hostile. They say one thing publicly and the opposite in private. They have learned how to “pass” in society, but even the most “assimilated” Jew may be an operative in disguise. They are quick to cry bigotry, but ignore the teachings of contempt within their own synagogues, schools, and sacred books. They never criticize each other. And, of course, they wish to frustrate the public expression of faith by non-Jews.

Benzion Netanyahu: An appreciation

Benzion Netanyahu — historian, one-time political activist and father of Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister — died Monday in Jerusalem at 102. An accomplished scholar and the patriarch of one of Israel’s most important political families, he also played a surprising and little-known role in United States political history.

Netanyahu was born in Poland in 1910 to a family deeply immersed in the world of religious Zionism. His father, Rabbi Nathan Mileikowsky, a popular Zionist preacher, brought the family to British-ruled Palestine in 1920. He Hebraicized the family name to Netanyahu.

Observing my children playing, I notice how the same toy, no matter how many times they play with it, can reveal the most remarkable things. My daughter, with the vocabulary befitting a 1 1/2-year-old, will bring her ball over to me and point to a mark on it with a delighted grunt.

“How remarkable!” I will say with (feigned) enthusiasm. To her, however, it is remarkable; she had never noticed it before.

 

 

The real-life Avenger

As moviegoers continue to flock to see Marvel’s new superhero ensemble, they would understandably associate the idea of Nazi-fighting avengers with Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Black Widow. In fact, however, there was also a real-life band of Jewish freedom fighters with the same name who were bent on sticking it to Adolf Hitler’s henchmen.

Let us start with the new film. Without giving away anything, let us just say it goes there. And, of course, Captain America was launched in 1941 with the iconic image of him punching Hitler in the face, knocking him for a loop. That is no surprise — Cap (like Superman, Batman, X-Men and so many other superheroes) was created by two Jews: Joe Simon (born Hymie Simon) and Jack Kirby (born Jacob Kurtzberg).

 

 

Israel must overhaul education system

The teacher stands in front of the sparse classroom, its walls bare and paint peeling.

“This school looks like a prison,” one of my fellow travelers whispers.

Many of the children are huddled in coats; schools in this neighborhood do not have heat, and the unexpected rain and cool air chill the room.

Overcrowded classrooms, minimal instruction hours in core subjects, and a shortage of qualified teachers have taken a toll on the country’s education system. These children must study in an NGO-funded afterschool program to gain the basic academic foundation they need to break the cycle of poverty.
