Mazal tov

Mazal tov to Michael J. Chananie, son of Beth and Robert Chananie of Paramus, who graduated from Paramus High School on June '4. He will attend the Honors College at Ramapo College of New Jersey and pursue a degree in hospital management. Michael received scholarships from Ramapo College, the Paramus Rotary, the Valley Hospital Auxiliary, the Paramus Environmental Commission, and a Dream Scholarship from Paramus High School. He also received the PHS business department award for excellence in marketing and made honorable mention for All League Boys Tennis-NNJIL Division B. His siblings are Joshua, '6, of Clifton, an accountant with Sax Macy Fromm & Co., PC, in Clifton, and Rachel, '4, of Springfield, an actuary at Buck Consultants in Secaucus. His grandparents are the late Ruth and Morris Janoff of Teaneck, formerly of Jersey City, founder of The Jewish Standard, and Frances and the late Richard Chananie of West Palm Beach, Fla., formerly of Englewood Cliffs. He is the nephew of James Janoff of Teaneck, publisher of the Jewish Standard, and Brad and Leslie Chananie of Westfield.

Mazal tov to Daniel Adam Bellehsen, son of Melissa Bellehsen of Bergenfield and Arieh Bellehsen of Leonia, who graduated from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., on May 16 with a bachelor of science degree. He majored in business economics and public policy and minored in criminal law. He will be working at BlackRock Investment Group in New York City as an analyst.

Mazal tov to Brianna Gold of Wayne, a junior at William Paterson University, who was inducted into the Beta Xi Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the Communications Honor Society. To qualify, a student must have an overall GPA of 3.0 and a communications GPA of 3.'5. In addition, each candidate must complete 60 credit hours of communications classes and show an active commitment to the field of communications. Brianna has been involved with many WPU television programs, serving as technical director, character generator, and producer. Last summer she interned at CNBC, and this summer she is interning with Magi Filmworks. Gold, a graduate of Wayne Hills High School, is the daughter of Robert and Hannah Lee Gold and the sister of Jason. She has made the dean's list since her freshman year.

Jack Galfund, son of Wendy and Matthew Galfund of Old Tappan, became a bar mitzvah on June '1 at Temple Beth El of Northern Valley in Closter.

Ariana Gates

Ariana Gates, daughter of Caryn and Larry Gates of Fair Lawn, became bat mitzvah on June 14 at Reconstructionist Temple Beth Israel in Maywood. Her grandparents are Dr. Ivan and Zelda Starr of Paramus and Rachel Gates of Hackensack. She devoted her mitzvah project to ocean conservancy and arctic mammal wildlife and sold beaded bracelets, created by her grandmother, Rachel Gates, with the names of three polar animals: the penguin, polar bear, and walrus. Proceeds from the sales were donated to the World Wildlife Fund and to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, which helps stranded marine mammals. She also arranged a Meadowlands Eco-Cruise for the synagogue, to help raise awareness of pollution and cleanup issues in that watershed area.

OBITUARIES

Tina Cohn

Tina Cohn, 93, n?e Korn, of Rutherford, died on June 17 at the Hackensack Hospice.

Born in West New York, she was a housewife and, along with her husband, Harry, owned Cohn's Stationary in Rutherford for many years. She was also a member of Temple Beth El and Hadassah of Rutherford.

Predeceased by her husband, Harry, she is survived by a son, Ivan, and his wife, Janie Sue Birchman, of Bologna, Italy; a sister, Sylvia Schaja, of Passaic; and a grandson, Michael Cohn.

Arrangements were by Jewish Memorial Chapel in Clifton.

Isidore Ezor

Isidore M. Ezor, 9', of Clifton, died on June 18 at St. Mary's Hospital in Passaic. A lifelong resident of Clifton, he earned a degree from the Wharton School of Business and was a district manager for Prudential Insurance Company in Newark for more than 35 years. He was a member of the Cong. Adas Israel in Passaic.

Surviving are his wife of 6' years, Gilda, n?e Laiks; a son, Herbert, of Mahwah; a daughter, Wendy Engler, and her husband, Dr. Mitchell, of Teaneck; and three grandchildren, Florice and Matthew Engler and William Scott Ezor.

Donations may be made to Hadassah or Cong. Adas Israel in Passaic.

Arrangements were by Jewish Memorial Chapel in Clifton.

Robert W. Schiessler

Robert W. Schiessler, 89, of Fort Lee, died on June '3 at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center.

Born in Honesdale, Pa., he was a retired chemist for Mobil Oil.

Surviving are his wife, Florence (n?e Cutler); a daughter, Lynn, of San Antonio, Texas; and five grandchildren.

Arrangements were by Eden Memorial Chapels in Fort Lee.

Sylvia Weiss

Sylvia Z. Weiss, n?e Zeichner, 96, died on June 14 at Abbey Delray South in Delray Beach, Fla.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a secretary for the City of New York. She is survived by a daughter, Arlene Berger, of Columbus; a son, Steve, of Tenafly; a brother, Oscar Zeichner; and six grandchildren.

Mazal tov to Dr. Israel Wahrman on his graduation from Rutgers University School of Law on May '3. He received his bachelor's degree from Yeshiva College and his Ph.D. from New York University and attended Rutgers Law School part-time while working full-time as supervisor of psychologists for the New York City Department of Education. He is married to Dr. Miryam Wahrman, science correspondent for this newspaper, and has two daughters, Susie Wahrman and Abigail "Abby" Cooper.

Mazal tov to Nikki Bezborodko, a second-grader at Solomon Schechter Day School of Bergen County in New Milford and the daughter of Lisa and Boaz Bezborodko of Teaneck, who donated her hair to Zichron Menachem. The Israeli-based nonprofit organization runs a "hair to wig" program that makes wigs with donated hair for children who have lost hair due to cancer treatments.

Locks of Love is a public nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

Mazal tov to Arun Viswanath, a graduating senior at the Frisch School in Paramus, who is among 560 semifinalists in the '008 Presidential Scholars Program. Candidates were selected from more than 3,000 entrants on the basis of achievement, leadership, personal character, and community and school involvement. Final scholar selection will be made this month by the Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of citizens appointed by President George Bush. One girl and one boy from each state, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, will be chosen. Scholars will travel to Washington, D.C., in June to receive a presidential medallion at a recognition ceremony.

OBITUARIES

Lillian K. Cantor

Lillian K. Cantor, 88, of Wayne died on April '3 at home.

A 1937 graduate of Eastside High School, she received an undergraduate degree from New York University and a master's degree in social work from Montclair State College. A social worker, she was a member of the child study team for the Paterson school system. Upon retiring, she volunteered at the YM-YWHA of North Jersey in Wayne for its "English as a Second Language" program. She also served on the Passaic County Court system's juvenile conference committee and was a member of B'nai B'rith and Temple Emanuel of North Jersey in Paterson.

Predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Robert, she is survived by a son, Philip Cantor, and his wife, the Honorable Jane Cantor; a daughter, Barbara Zitcer, and her husband, Marc; seven married grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were by Robert Schoem's Menorah Chapel in Paramus.

Irving Eisenstat

Irving Eisenstat, 90, died on April '3 in Scottsdale, Ariz. A longtime resident of Bayonne, he moved to Arizona last year.

Before retiring 35 years ago, he was a printing broker who worked for the Department of the Navy, first in Washington, D.C., and then at MOTBY, the Military Ocean Terminal at Bayonne. He received a "'0-year" pin in 1967. He also owned Irving Eisenstat Products, selling advertising specialties.

He was the secretary of the Bayonne Aid Progressive Society, a social/community service organization. He was also a 50-year member of Menorah Masonic Lodge '49 in Bayonne, which subsequently became Peninsula Lodge 99. He organized the '5th and 50th reunions for his Bayonne High School class of 1936 and was a philatelist with an extensive collection of U.S. and Israeli postage stamps.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Mildred, of Queen Creek, Ariz.

Graveside services will be held at United Hebrew Cemetery in Staten Island today at 1 p.m. Arrangements were by Gutterman Bros.in Bayonne.

Florence Kagno
Kent Spinrad

Florence Kagno Kent Spinrad, 93, of Teaneck, formerly of Cranbury as well as Roslyn Heights, N.Y., died on April '3. She was born in New York City.

Predeceased by her husbands Mortimer Kent and Bernard Spinrad, and a brother, Isidore Kagno, she is survived by a daughter, Elaine Abramas, and her husband, Allan; a son, Ira, and his fianc?e, Judy Schlanger; five grandchildren, Roberta, David, Michael, Joshua and his wife, Sandra, and Jaimie; and seven great-grandchildren, Maxwell, Madison, Isaac, Megan, Reid, Charlotte, and Madeline.

Graveside services were held at Cedar Park Cemetery in Paramus; arrangements were by Gutterman-Musicant Funeral Directors in Hackensack.

Alexander/Moskowitz

Amanda Rose Alexander, daughter of Sharon and Ben Alexander of Teaneck, and Avi Moskowitz, son of Rachel and Bob Moskowitz of Elizabeth, are engaged. They met three years ago while in high school.

The future bride is an undergraduate student at Baruch College of the City University of New York. She recently completed a year of study abroad at Midreshet HaRova in the Old City of Jerusalem. Her grandparents are Eve and John Sputz of Oakland, and Edna and Ian Alexander of Elizabeth.

The future groom, a student at Touro College, is working towards a bachelor's degree in psychology. He recently completed one and a half years of study at Yeshivat Tiferet Yerushalayim in Bayit Vegan, Jerusalem. His grandparents are Lila and Max Reiser of Philadelphia, and Rita and the late Allan Moskowitz of Elizabeth.

An August wedding is planned.

Carrie Suzanne Markowitz, daughter of Norma Markowitz of Pikesville, Md., and Carl Markowitz of Virginia Beach, Va., and Ethan Daniel Balsam, son of Howard and Rhoda Balsam of Teaneck, are engaged.

The future bride, a graduate of the University of Virginia and Boston University College of Communications, is an attorney recruitment coordinator with Crowell & Moring LLP in New York City. The future groom, a graduate of Cornell University and Syracuse University College of Law, is a lawyer with Ingerman Smith LLP in Hauppauge, N.Y.

An October '008 wedding is planned in New York City.

Shari Pollard, daughter of Randi and Alan Pollard of North Caldwell, and Ryan Lederman, son of Harriet and Sanford Lederman of Closter, are engaged.

The future bride, a 1999 graduate of West Essex Regional High School in North Caldwell, received a bachelor's degree in '003 from the University of Indiana. She works in the institutional equity department at Unicredit Bank in Manhattan.

The future groom, a 1995 graduate of Northern Valley Regional High School in Demarest, received a bachelor's degree in 1999 in international finance and marketing from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla. He is a vice president of investments for UBS Financial Services in New York City.

Batya Tiferet Elka Weisinger was born on March 7 at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center to L'via and Charlie Weisinger of Teaneck. Her grandparents are Jeanette and Philip Sieradski of New Milford, Miriam and Sam Weisinger of Queens, N.Y., and David Nemtzov of Toronto, Canada. Mazal tov

Mazal tov to Dr. Gloria F. Cohen of River Edge, who received the Hall of Fame award for '008 from the New Jersey Association for Gifted Children. The presentation of the award — the highest honor the group bestows — was made at NJAGC's annual conference on Feb. '9, at the West Forrestal Village in Princeton.

Dr. Cohen, who retired in 1997 from her position as coordinator of the K-1' enrichment program in the Ramsey Public Schools, was nominated by her peers for outstanding contributions in the field of gifted education.

The honoree was cited for her dedication to educating and improving the quality of life for gifted children, and contributing to the field for over three decades. She served for many years as a consultant to school districts and organizations and presented seminars and workshops for the Gifted Child Society, Bergen County Consortium for Teachers of the Gifted, Montclair State University, and the New Jersey Association for Gifted Children. In addition, she was a guest lecturer for graduate courses at Montclair State and Fairleigh Dickinson universities, and Teachers College at Columbia University.

Dr. Cohen received her doctorate in education from Teachers College. Her dissertation, "Creatively Gifted Students," received the John Gowan award from the National Association for Gifted Children. In 1997, she received the NJAGC Educator of the Year, the New Jersey Best Practices, and the New Jersey Teacher Recognition awards. She has been nominated for Who's Who in American Education.

OBITUARIES

Harold (Hirshel) Freed

Harold (Hirshel) Freed died on Feb. '5 at St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston.

Born to Russian immigrants in Brooklyn in 1910, he was the youngest of 11 children. His parents ran a farm and boarding house in High Falls, N.Y., where the family spent their summers. His father was a jeweler and president of a shul.

He spent much of the Depression years working in the electronics industry. Although self-taught, he took industrial engineering courses at New York University and helped to establish his brother's company, becoming the plant superintendent of Freed Transformer. He retired due to poor health in 1967. He spent his later years in Ridgewood and West Orange, with winters spent in Miami Beach, Fla.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ethel, n?e Safran, in '004. Married in 1940, they raised their family in the Mosholu section of the Bronx, where they lived for 55 years. Surviving are a daughter, Susan Landau, and her husband, Joseph, of Ridgewood; a son, Richard, and his wife, Natalie, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; four grandchildren, Bill, Romi, Michael, and Jenny; and four great-grandchildren, Alexa, Danielle, Emily, and Mellisa.

Arrangements were by Robert Schoem's Menorah Chapel in Paramus.

Nettie Garment

Nettie Garment, 85, formerly of North Bergen, died on March '.

Predeceased by her husband, Charles, a brother, Louis Klastorin, and two sisters, Sylvia Fishman and Gertrude Mandel, she is survived by three sons, Barry, Martin, and Edward; a grandson, Michael; and nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by Wien & Wien Inc., Funeral Directors in Hackensack.

Raisa Kravets

Raisa Kravets, 95, of Fort Lee, died on Feb. '8 at Bergen Regional Medical Center.

Born in Ukraine, she was a homemaker and a member of Chabad of Bergen County.

She is survived by a son, Arkadiy Shpigel, of Fort Lee.

Carol Leighton

Carol Leighton, 77, n?e Levin, of Fort Lee, formerly of West Orange, died on Feb. '9 at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.

Born in Bayonne, she was a secretary for State Farm Insurance in Whippany.

Surviving are a daughter, Audrey Cole, of Fort Lee; a son, Michael, of Cliffside Park; and five grandchildren.

Burton Mandelbaum

Burton Mandelbaum, 84, of Wayne, formerly of West Paterson and Toms River, died on March ' at the Atrium Nursing Home in Wayne.

Born in the Bronx, he was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He was a console operator for the United States Postal Service and a member of the YM-YWHA Senior Social Club of Wayne.

Predeceased by a brother, Milton, he is survived by his wife, Carolyn, n?e Schneider; a son, Jerry; two daughters, Susan Kinney and Gail Rivlin; six grandchildren, Jonathan Kinney, Carla Mizzone, Justin Mandelbaum, Hayley Rivlin, Eric Rivlin, and Steven Rivlin; and one great-grandchild, Ella Mizzone.

Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to Hospice of New Jersey.

Manny Margules

Manny Margules, 85, of Englewood Cliffs, formerly of Queens, N.Y., died on Feb. '1.

He was the only one in his family to survive the Holocaust. He arrived alone and penniless in America in November 1947 and retired as president of a garment business. He was a president of the Czenstochover Society and a member of Cong. Ahavath Torah in Englewood for '6 years.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Phyllis; two sons, Rubin and Sheldon; a daughter, Rita Wein; 11 grandchildren, and 13 great- grandchildren.

Arrangements were by Wien & Wien in Hackensack.

Adele Shatzoff

Adele Shatzoff, n?e Tondow, 86, of Hackensack, died on Feb. '8.

Born in Paterson, she was a longtime member of the Hackensack/Teaneck chapter of Hadassah and volunteered at Planned Parenthood.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Nat; two daughters, Toby Feinberg and Judy Munoz; and a son, Fred.

Arrangements were by Louis Suburban Chapel in Fair Lawn.

Edna Stone

Edna Stone, n?e Horowitz, 95, died on Feb. '8 at home.

Born in New York City, she was a homemaker.

Predeceased by her husband, Milton, she is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by Eden Memorial Chapels in Fort Lee.

Herbert Susser

Herbert Susser, 9', of Clifton, a Paterson resident for 78 years, died on Feb. '8.

He was a retired judge of the Superior Court of New Jersey and a managing partner of the law firm of Brenman, Susser, and Piper, formerly with offices in Paterson. He was active in the greater Paterson community, serving as former president of the YM-YWHA of North Jersey, the New Jersey Federation of YM-YWHAs, and the Paterson lodge of B'nai B'rith. He served on the board of the Community Synagogue, Daughters of Miriam Home for the Aged, and the Miriam Apartments, where he was senior vice president. He was also a member of the Veritans Club and the Passaic County and New Jersey Bar Associations. In addition, he supported the United Fund and United Jewish Appeal. Judge Susser received the Harry S. Feller award for outstanding service to the North Jersey Jewish community and also the B'nai B'rith Americanism award.

Surviving are his wife of 6' years, Gloria; two sons, Jack and his wife, Bonnie, of Fair Lawn, and Allen and his wife, Andrea, of Wayne; and four grandchildren, Alexa, Alicia, Carly, and Mark.

Contributions may be made to the Fair Lawn Jewish Center/Cong. B'nai Israel or Hackensack University Medical Center.

Arrangements were by Robert Schoem's Menorah Chapel in Paramus.

Ethel Ziegler

Ethel Ziegler, 90, n?e Rosenstein, died on March 3 at the St. Joseph's Medical Center in Paterson.

Born in Poland, she lived in Israel for 10 years before moving to Passaic in 1958. Before retiring 3' years ago, she was a seamstress for many years and a member of Cong. Tifereth Israel in Passaic.

Predeceased by her husband, Mayer, she is survived by a daughter, Bella Goldberg, and her husband, Laurence, of Rutherford; a son, David, and his wife, Esther, of Wayne; a sister, Klara Menaker of Israel; and five grandchildren, Zev, Daniel, Lily, Benjamin, and Debra.

Mazal tov to Peri Harris, 5, and Ruby Harris, 6, of Parkland, Fla., formerly of Morganville, each of whom recently donated more than 8 inches of hair to Locks of Love, an organization that provides hairpieces for children suffering from long-term hair loss. The girls, along with their parents, Jodi and Craig Harris, and a brother, Jacob, belong to Temple Kol Tikvah in Parkland. Their grandparents are Merle and Fred Harris of Paramus, longtime members of the Jewish Community Center of Paramus.

Mazal tov to Ethel Sands, who will be 100 years old today. A celebration in her honor will be held on March ' with local family members and relatives from Florida and Nevada. Before moving to a senior residence in Whippany six years ago, she lived in the Bronx, and then in Fort Lee for some 3' years.

Gabriella Uvegi

Gabriella Uvegi, daughter of Clarissa and Harry Uvegi of New York City, became a bat mitzvah on Dec. 9, the fifth day of Chanukah, at the Abraham Joshua Heschel High School. She read from the Torah and delivered a d'var Torah. She also read Parashat Toldot on Nov. 8 at the Abraham Joshua Heschel Middle School, where she is a sixth-grader. Her grandparents are Anita and Robert Payne, formerly of Jersey City, now living in New York City.

Gerda Heidelberg

Gerda Heidelberg, n?e Van Leeuwen, of River Vale, formerly of Iselin, died on Feb. '5.

Born in Duisburg, Germany, she immigrated to Argentina in 1937, and to the United States in 1963. She was an active member of the River Vale Senior Club.

Predeceased by her husband, Otto, she is survived by two sons, Ernesto and his wife, Zuma, and Eduardo and his wife, Virginia; a daughter, Eva Erb and her husband, Manuel; her grandchildren, Denise Heidelberg, Monica Heidelberg, Karen D'Ambrosio, Erica Erb, Michael Heidelberg, and Jeffrey Heidelberg; and four great-grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Lillian, and Delia.

Mitchell Levy

Mitchell Levy of Edgewater, 60, died on Feb. '3 at Hackensack University Medical Center.

Born in Brooklyn, he owned JB&T Garment Manufacturing in Monticello, N.Y.

He is survived by his wife, Meg; a daughter, Shari; a son, Elliot; and a brother, Harold.

Ralph Wolff

Ralph William Wolff, 89, of Fair Lawn, formerly of Paterson, died on Feb. 6.

Born in Paterson, he graduated from Eastside High School and was a member of the 1940 City College of New York graduating class, where he was a member of ROTC. He served in World War II as an infantry officer in the Aleutians and the European theater. In 1946, he started Quality Press, an offset printing company producing commercial and school yearbooks. As a leader in the Jewish community, he served as president of the Fair Lawn Jewish Center, its Men's Progress club, and the Fair Lawn Jewish Community Council, and was chair of the Fair Lawn United Jewish Appeal and State of Israel Bonds committee. His grandfather, William Wolff, founded Wolff's Kasha in 1868, a family business in Paterson.

Predeceased by a brother, Lewis, he is survived by his wife, Paulette, n?e Schotz; three daughters, Barbara Safer and her husband, Eliot, of Jacksonville, Fla., Patty Ritt and her husband, Howard, of Fair Lawn, and Susan Diamond and her husband, Peter, of Ossining, N.Y.; and grandchildren, Morry Safer and his wife, Rachel, Mathew Safer and his wife, Dede, Jake and Marc Ritt, and Martin and Raney Diamond.

Services were held at the Fair Lawn Jewish Center/Cong. B'nai Israel; arrangements were by Robert Schoem's Menorah Chapel in Paramus.

Dov Yair Kustanowitz

Dov Yair Kustanowitz was born in Silver Spring, Md., on Feb. 6 to Penina and Jack Kustanowitz. He weighed 7 lb. 6 oz. The name "Dov" is for his father's maternal grandmother, Devorah, and his mother's great-grandfather, Shalom Dov. The name Yair, meaning "he shall bring light," is for his mother's grandfather, Feibush Yisrael. Dov Yair's grandparents are Rena and Steven Rantz of Boca Raton, Fla., and Shuly and Al Kustanowitz of Fair Lawn.
