Rabbi Helga Newmark

Rabbi Helga Newmark, 79, of Hackensack, died on March 6.

A Holocaust survivor, she was a graduate of Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City and was ordained as a rabbi in 2000. She taught at Temple Sholom in River Edge, Temple Emanu-El in Westfield, and Barnert Temple in Franklin Lakes. She was the author of “Letters To The Wise One: Conversation With God” and a member of Temple Avodat Shalom and the Central Conference of American Rabbis.

Predeceased by her husband, Eric, she is survived by her children, Debbie Leffler (Russell) of Norwalk, Ohio, Carol Cohen (Robert) of Boonton, and Edward (Abbey) of Avenel; and grandchildren, Ben, Ellen, Martha, and Joe Leffler, Jenna, Lisa, and Michael Cohen, and Ian and Ryan Newmark.

Donations can be made to Temple Avodat Shalom c/o Holocaust Education Fund; The Jewish National Fund; or the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey for disaster relief.

Services were at Temple Avodat Shalom; arrangements were by Louis Suburban Chapel, Fair Lawn.

 
 

Harriett Margulies

Harriett W. Margulies, 84, née Weiner, of Fort Lee, died on March 11 at home.

Born in New York City, she was predeceased by her husband, Ned, in 2008, and is survived by a daughter, Alissa of Manhattan; and a son, Alan, of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Arrangements were by Eden Memorial Chapels,
Fort Lee.

 
 

Muriel Katz

Muriel Helen Goldberg Katz, 89, died on March 5 in Scottsdale, Ariz. She was formerly of Tucson, Ariz., Teaneck, Verona, Bloomfield, and Newark.

Born in Paterson, she graduated from Montclair State Teachers College and also earned a master’s degree. She was a guidance counselor at Northern Valley Regional High School for over 20 years.

She is survived by her husband of over 67 years, Howard, a daughter, Susan; a son, Michael (Sandra Kurinsky); grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Donations can be sent to the New Jersey Y Camps scholarship fund or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Arrangements were by Robert Schoem’s Menorah Chapel, Paramus.

Leslie Davidoff

Leslie R. Davidoff, née Schwartz, 64, of Lake Worth, Fla., formerly of Fair Lawn, died on March 11.

Predeceased by her first husband, Harvey Schutzman, she is survived by her husband, Robert Davidoff; children, Jeremy Goldstein (Holly Miles), Rebecca Provitera (Paxton), Brad Schutzman, and Corey Schutzman; a brother, Harvey Schwartz (Debbie); and grandchildren, Brandon Miles Goldstein and Casey, Maya, and Quinn Provitera.

Corinne Stern

Corinne Stern, 87, of Hillsdale, died on March 3.

Born in the Bronx, she graduated Hunter College with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education and taught elementary school in Manhattan for more 30 years.

She is survived by a daughter, Robin Gudgel (Dennis); two sons, Bill (Amy) and Jamie (Jeannene Doub); and grandchildren Mollie Stern, Chasen Stern, Hayley Stern, Mia Stern, and Ania Stern.

Donations may be made to Villa Marie Claire, c/o Holy Name Medical Center, Teaneck.

Arrangements were by Robert Schoem’s Menorah Chapel, Paramus.

 
 

Arthur Neufeld

Arthur M. Neufeld, 60, of Fair Lawn, formerly of Paterson, died on Feb. 29.

He was a teacher at Public School 10 and at Eastside High School, both in Paterson, and directed Fair Lawn Camp Sycamore for 10 years. He was a member of Temple Avodat Shalom in River Edge.

Predeceased by his father, Bernard, and a brother, Bruce; he is survived by his wife, Lois; his mother, Lorraine; a daughter, Emily; a son, Max; a brother, Daniel (Heidi); and nieces and nephew, Rebecca, Dana, and Bruce Neufeld.

Donations can be sent to the Vasculitis Foundation.

Chester Kates

Chester Kates died on March 4 in Ridgewood.

Born in Passaic, he was an owner of Kates Brothers Shoes in Hackensack and Wyckoff.

He is survived by his children Joshua (Sharon), Tara (Bryan), Burt, and Paul; a brother, Michael (Jackie); a sister, Sharon Sosny (Richard); and five grandchildren, Talia, Fredric, Aaron, Evelyn, and Michael.
